Fundamentals of Natural Food to Heal Your Body [ 8 ]
A Space to Pause and Reflect
I want to build this Journal as a space for all of us living in today’s fast-paced world—a quiet place where we can briefly pause our breathless lives, think, look back, and gain clarity. My hope is that here, you can find insights big or small, align with the right direction, and rediscover the strength to continue walking your path with grounded certainty.
I do not expect every member of the JINPATH family to agree 100% with every single word or article I write. And that is completely fine.
My reason for sharing these letters is not to seek your total agreement. Rather, I want this Journal to be a space where our JINPATH family can broaden their perspectives on health and food, and learn to think about them with true ownership.
Today, I invite you to join me in taking a 10-minute pause from the breathless rush of life's long journey. As I write these words, I am taking a moment to reflect on my own life alongside yours.
Stepping Into the Five Elements
In the previous article, we explored the concept of Yin and Yang—the first half of 'Yin-Yang and the Five Elements.' It is a vast topic filled with deep wisdom, and I tried my best to make it as simple and accessible as possible. How did it feel to you?
Since we have already discussed Yin and Yang together, it is time to move forward into the Five Elements. If you haven’t had a chance to read the story on Yin and Yang yet, I recommend clicking [here] to read it first.
Now, let us begin our journey into the Five Elements.
As many of you may have heard, the Five Elements are represented as:
Wood (목, 木), Fire (화, 火), Earth (토, 土), Metal (금, 金), Water (수, 水).
However, these words are not meant to be taken literally as physical wood, fire, earth, metal, or water.
Instead, these five words are chosen simply as metaphors—a language used to express five distinct energies, five principles of nature, and five universal flows.
Think of it this way: when we say someone has a "heart of gold," we do not mean their physical heart is made of metal. We choose the word "gold" to describe a warm, pure, and noble soul. When we say "lips like cherries," we are not saying lips are actual fruit; we use the word "cherry" to express their vibrant red beauty.
In the exact same way, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water do not describe raw materials. They are words chosen to help us understand the flow of life, natural order, and the movement of vital energy—or Qi.
Now, let us begin by exploring Wood together.

1. [ Wood ]: The Force That Breaks Through
When most people hear the word "Wood," they picture a tree in the forest, a piece of timber, or wooden furniture. But in the language of the Five Elements, Wood is not a static object. It is a direction. It is a movement.
Wood represents the explosive, unstoppable energy that moves from the bottom up, and from the inside out.
The Sprout Piercing Concrete
Imagine a tiny green sprout in early spring. It lies buried under cold, hard, frozen earth—or even beneath thick asphalt. By all logic, that soft, delicate leaf should be crushed.
Yet, it breaks through. It tears through the solid ground and reaches toward the sun.
Where does that power come from?
It comes from an extraordinary pressure stored within the seed, bursting outward when the time is right. No matter how heavy the barrier above it may be, this force refuses to be contained.
It is the energy of breaking through.
The Spark of New Beginnings
In nature, this is the essence of Spring—the moment when life awakens after the long, cold silence of Winter.
In our daily rhythm, it is the first light of Dawn breaking through the dark.
In human life, it is the boundless vitality and curiosity of early childhood.
It is the surge of life that whispers: It is time to wake up. It is time to grow.
Wood Within You
This same force lives inside you right now.
In your physical body, this energy belongs to your Liver and Gallbladder, as well as the tendons that allow you to stretch, stand tall, and move. It is the vital force that pumps blood to the very tips of your toes, waking up every single cell.
In your mind and spirit, Wood is your drive to start something new. It is the determination that pushes you past obstacles when you feel stuck, and the clarity that allows you to make a bold decision.
Wood is not just a piece of timber. It is the living, breathing spark that pierces through the darkness and forces life to begin again.
