Journey of Water 09 - Primal Resilience

The deeper you go, the quieter it gets.

Strength Found in the Unrefined

We often perceive 'healing' as something soft and gentle. Yet, nature occasionally restores us through methods that are raw and piercing. The unfathomable salinity of the deep sea, the bitter vigor of coarse hemp fibers, and the essence of protein released as a firm cocoon unravels.

These are the manifestations of unadulterated life force. In this journey, we explore how raw energy pierces through the most stubborn blockages within us, allowing parched cells to breathe once more. True restoration often begins at the roughest origins.

25.Byeok-Hae-Su:

The Absolute Solvent

A relentless force from the great abyss, this water dissolves the ancient toxins of the flesh with the primordial power of the deep.

  • Definition: Saltwater sourced from the furthest reaches of the open sea, untouched by terrestrial contamination. It is the 'primordial water'—a concentrated essence of the ocean's pure energy.
  • Symbolism & Properties: It symbolizes the 'Absolute Solvent.' Much like the ocean is a vast womb that accepts and dissolves all things, Byeok-Hae-Su possesses a powerful disintegrating energy that forcibly separates stubborn diseases and toxicity clinging to the body.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: In Dongui Bogam, this water was used to wash away the toxins of chronic skin conditions (such as leprosy or scabies) that ordinary water could not cure. It was also recorded as a potent emergency purifier to immediately expel internal toxins during acute food poisoning or gastric stagnation.
  • Modern Perspective: Scientifically, seawater is the planet's richest reservoir of minerals. Through the principle of osmotic pressure, it draws out waste from skin cells, while high concentrations of magnesium suppress inflammatory responses. This aligns with modern 'Mineral Shock' therapy, which resets the body's ionic balance to maximize self-healing.

26.Ma-Bi-Tang:

The Essence of Quenching Heat

Ma-Bi-Tang encompasses two profound observations within its name. One is an insight into the visual form of boiling water, and the other is a record of the cooling power of raw hemp. This water serves as a vital prescription for extinguishing the fires of internal thirst and gathering scattered, abnormal heat.

  • Definition:
    1. The Visual Definition: A state where boiling water creates countless tiny bubbles that resemble the scattering of hemp seeds (Ma-Si).
    2. The Pharmacological Definition: Water in which the leaves, roots, or stems of raw hemp have been boiled, transferring the plant's cooling properties into the liquid.
  • Symbolism & Properties: It is akin to "Rain for an internal drought." Characterized by a cold and clear nature, it symbolizes a powerful hydrating force that lowers abnormal internal heat and moistens the body's parched areas.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: According to the Dongui Bogam, Ma-Bi-Tang is used to treat So-gal (a condition of extreme thirst similar to modern diabetes) and to lower unnecessary heat rising within the body. In ancient times, its cooling and soothing properties were also utilized as a foundation for analgesics and anesthetics.
  • Modern Perspective: It offers an answer to the "chronic thirst" and "stress-induced heat" experienced by modern individuals. The natural compounds found in raw hemp help stabilize the nervous system and effectively cool the friction heat generated during metabolic processes.

27.Jo-Sa-Tang:

The Silken Reservoir

Released from the sacred bond of the cocoon, this water infuses the parched cells with a fluid elegance that restores the body’s inner glow.

  • Definition: Water created by boiling silkworm cocoons or raw silk. It contains the proteins and energy held within the cocoon before it transforms into noble silk.
  • Symbolism & Properties: It symbolizes the 'Silken Reservoir.' A product of the magical process where rough cocoons become soft silk, this water represents the energy of a 'gentle protective barrier' that overcomes dryness and coats each cell with a moisturizing film.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: In Dongui Bogam, Jo-Sa-Tang is classified as a key medicinal water for treating So-Gal (modern-day diabetes). It soothes extreme thirst that parches the internal organs and cools excessive heat in the stomach, using the silk protein's softness to protect mucous membranes.
  • Modern Perspective: Sericin, an amino acid extracted from silk, is considered one of the most powerful Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) in the modern beauty industry. Rich in natural peptides, Jo-Sa-Tang functions as 'liquid collagen,' dramatically increasing moisture retention and restoring elasticity to tissues dried by aging.

To my Sik-Gu:
Embrace the Raw

This morning, I woke up 15 minutes early to feel the energy of the water that fills 70% of my being. In this world, we tend to avoid the "Raw" and seek only what is smooth and processed. However, the true power that restores our health often lies hidden within that raw essence.

My dear Sik-Gu, if your body feels heavy and stagnant, wash yourself with the decisiveness of Byeok-Hae-Su’s salinity. If your energy is blocked, shatter that wall with the resilience of Ma-Bi-Tang. And if you suffer from parched thirst, drench yourself in the elegance of Jo-Sa-Tang.

Nature is not always gentle, but nature is always precise. Only when you are ready to embrace that raw energy will your healing truly be complete.

In our next journey, I want to share the stories of water that remind us how precious and warm our ordinary days can be.
