Journey of Water 11 - The Final Cycle of Completion

The circle is complete. From the first dawn to the final boil, every drop was a lesson.

Inspired by the legacy of Heo Jun, the legendary 17th-century royal physician, this journey explores the Dongui Bogam. Completed in 1610 and later enshrined as a UNESCO World Heritage, it is the 400-year-old foundation of our quest through the 33 waters.

31. Mo-Oak-Nu-Su:

The Humility of the Earth’s Filter

As a child, I used to stare blankly at the rain dripping from the eaves on rainy days. I once thought it was merely dirty, muddy water, but while studying the Dongui Bogam, I realized it was a life-saving medicinal elixir for those in desperate need. Passing through the rice straw of an old thatched roof, it carries the essence of the earth—this is Mo-Oak-Nu-Su (茅屋漏수).

  • Definition: Rainwater that has trickled down the straw of an old thatched roof. It is "humble water" filtered as the energy of heaven passes through the lowest human dwellings made of straw and soil.
  • Symbolism & Properties: It is cold in nature, bitter in taste, and non-toxic. Though it may appear cloudy, it contains the concentrated purification power of the earth and the long years of the roof. It possesses a strong downward (Ha-Haeng) energy that draws out "evil qi" (Sa-Gi) lodged deep within the body.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: The Dongui Bogam records Mo-Oak-Nu-Su as an emergency prescription for treating wounds from rabid dogs (rabies) or various types of poisoning. Known as the "ultimate detoxifier," it is excellent at washing away toxins that have penetrated deep into the skin and discharging contaminated energy.
  • Modern Perspective: Bacillus subtilis and natural organic compounds native to the rice straw react with rainwater to create antibacterial and immune-active components. This follows a principle similar to modern "natural fermented filtrates," representing the biochemical wisdom of nature in neutralizing specific toxins.

32. Dong-Gi-Sang-Han:

The Sharp Clarity of Reason

Have you ever seen the dew formed on the surface of a cold brass bowl in the early morning? The chilling sensation against your fingertips is so clear it snaps your mind awake. Dong-Gi-Sang-Han (銅器上汗) is "the dew born of reason," created by the cold property of metal condensing the invisible moisture in the air.

  • Definition: Water collected from the dew formed on the surface of bronze or copper vessels. It is a pure essence where the energy of "Metal" (Geum) has condensed "Water" (Su).
  • Symbolism & Properties: Symbolizing the "Metal" energy among the Five Elements, it possesses a sharp and cool nature. This is optimized for governing the unregulated "Fire" (Hwa) within our bodies. It settles an anxious mind and sharpens a blurred spirit like a fine blade.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: In the Dongui Bogam, Dong-Gi-Sang-Han was used to quench the intense thirst caused by diabetes (So-Gal). It also served as a "neural coolant," cooling the heat in the chest to restore reason when one was experiencing mental confusion or delirium due to high fever.
  • Modern Perspective: Water that has been rapidly cooled on a metal surface exhibits an extremely dense and uniform molecular structure. This micro-structured water is absorbed quickly by the body and helps stabilize neurotransmitters, making it effective in soothing the "overheated brain" caused by modern chronic stress.

33. Chwi-Tang:

The Masterpiece of Transformation

The finale of the 33-water journey is not a water of flashy origins. It is Chwi-Tang (炊湯)—water that has been boiled once, cooled, and then boiled again. Perhaps the reason this seemingly ordinary water is placed at the end is to remind us of a vital truth: true completion is achieved not through something grandiose, but through repeated sincerity and trials.

  • Definition: Water that has been boiled, cooled, and then boiled once more. It represents a state where energy has been reactivated through two distinct thermal transformations.
  • Symbolism & Properties: It symbolizes the "completion of patience and circulation". Through the repeated trials of boiling and cooling, the water molecules become more refined and impurities are completely removed. This represents a powerful "Reset" force that reawakens the body's stalled metabolism.
  • Oriental Medicine Use: The Dongui Bogam states that Chwi-Tang is excellent for warming the digestive system, normalizing intestinal function, and clearing blocked energy. It was used as a "master key for circulation," treating chronic indigestion or swelling and facilitating the flow of energy between the upper and lower body.
  • Modern Perspective: Repeated heating rearranges the hydrogen bonds of water, creating smaller clusters. This results in "high-efficiency energy water" that increases the rate of penetration through cell membranes without burdening the stomach, immediately activating metabolism and assisting in the discharge of waste.

To my Sik-Gu:

Now, it is your turn to become the water.

Through this journey, we have traced the lives of 33 distinct waters. Yet, at the threshold of this conclusion, the truth remains clear: Heo Jun did not meticulously categorize these waters merely to record their chemical properties. He did so to teach us 33 ways of being—attitudes to adopt for the countless seasons of our lives.

Some days, you must embody the cold clarity of metal to extinguish a raging fire. Other days, you must adopt the profound humility of a weathered roof to empty yourself. And on some days, you must endure the repeated cycles of boiling and cooling to emerge as something clearer and more resilient.

Do not struggle to memorize the names of these waters anymore. Instead, linger in the fleeting moment you lift your glass. What resides there is not just a liquid to quench your thirst, but a silent answer to how you will flow through this day.

The 33 wisdoms have now left the printed page and begun to pulse within your veins. You are never a static entity. You are a magnificent vibration of life—shifting, breaking, and converging in every moment.

the journey ends here. And your own exquisite flow begins right now.

The script ends, but your flow remains eternal.
