Journey of Water 10 - The Alchemy of Form

Water is never stagnant in its identity. It rises as a warm mist, freezes into a solid crystal, and rests in the humble hollows of a path. It teaches us that to survive the different seasons of life, we must be willing to change our form without losing our essence. In this chapter, we explore the alchemy of transformation—water that has been shaped by heat, cold, and the simple passage of time.
The Wisdom of Transformation
In the Dongui Bogam, the state of water is as important as its source. Whether it is gaseous, solid, or resting in a temporary pool, each form carries a specific frequency for healing. It reminds us that our vitality is not a fixed point, but a constant dance between different states of being.
28. Jeung-Gi-Su :
The Essence of Ascent
This is the steam collected from a rice steamer.
It is water that has been touched by fire and turned into a rising spirit.
Definition: Pure vapor or steam captured during the process of steaming rice or medicinal herbs.
Symbolism & Properties: It carries the energy of expansion and "rising." Historically, it was used to blacken hair and treat persistent headaches caused by "internal wind." It is the medicine of beauty and ascent, reminding us that sometimes we need to lighten our load to reach the upper parts of our being.
Modern Perspective: Think of this as the liquid version of a mental "clearance." Just as steam opens our pores and clears our lungs, Jeung-Gi-Su represents the power of letting go of the heavy and embracing the ethereal. It is for those whose thoughts feel stuck and heavy.
29.Ok-Ryu-Su:
The Living Vibration
Crashing against the ancient jade and stone, this water is a symphony of oxygen and minerals, delivering the vibrant pulse of the mountain directly to the spirit.
- Definition: Pure water that flows over jade (Ok) or through rocky mountain streams. It is defined by its perpetual motion and the white foam created as it strikes the stones, a process that "awakens" the water.
- Symbolism & Properties: It represents "Dynamic Vitality." While other waters offer stillness, Ok-Ryu-Su offers momentum. It carries the energy of friction and collision, which serves to break through the internal "dams" of the body and restore the natural flow of Qi.
- Oriental Medicine Use: According to the Dongui Bogam, Ok-Ryu-Su is highly effective for clearing excess heat from the heart and lungs. It is traditionally prescribed to soothe the throat, stop persistent coughing, and alleviate the sensation of chest oppression. It is the primary remedy for edema (swelling) caused by stagnant circulation.
- Modern Perspective: This water is naturally "structured" due to its high kinetic energy. The constant aeration as it falls over rocks maximizes dissolved oxygen levels and generates negative ions. Modern science suggests that such water improves micro-circulation and enhances cellular oxygenation, acting as a natural metabolic trigger to combat chronic fatigue.
30. Yo-Su :
The Stillness of the Track
This is rainwater that has settled in the tracks of a road or a field.
It is the humble mirror of the path.
Definition: Rainwater that collects temporarily in depressions on a road or a path.
Symbolism & Properties: While it seems common, its power lies in its ability to settle. It was used to treat sudden digestive chaos—vomiting and bloating. It is the medicine of 'settling.' It reminds us that after a storm, we don't always need to keep flowing; sometimes we just need to sit still and let the mud sink to the bottom.
Modern Perspective: Life often feels like a messy storm. Yo-Su teaches us the value of the "puddle moment." When your digestion—physical or mental—is in chaos, stop moving. Let the world's dirt settle. Clarity doesn't come from the rushing river; it comes from the stillness of the track.
To my Sik-Gu:
Are you perhaps facing a day where life feels so heavy that even catching your breath seems difficult?
We often forget how fragile we are, and yet, how magnificent. You are not a static statue carved in cold marble. You are the living, breathing pulse of the earth, shifting with every passing moment.
Are there days when life pushes you so hard that you find it difficult to breathe? Remember the sacred ascent of Jeung-Gi-Su. It is only within the fiercest fires of suffering that the purest essence of the soul can rise as steam.
Does the noise of the world blur your vision and cloud your heart? Submerge yourself in the profound silence of Yo-Su. Become that hidden pool where no one wanders. Wait until the mud settles and the water clears, until you can finally see the true reflection of your own soul.
Do you feel trapped, as if your life is stagnating behind a wall? Emulate the reckless courage of Ok-Ryu-Su. Even if you must shatter yourself against the ancient rocks, it is within that collision—amidst the foam and the spray—that the most vibrant vibration of life is born.
You are a process, not a product. Rise as steam, rest in silence, and break through the stones. As long as your rhythm endures, your healing has already begun.
What breath will you choose to live today?
The Dongui Bogam is more than a historical record; it is a profound dialogue between nature and the human body. As we move through the 33 waters, we aren't just looking back at the 17th century—we are listening to a 400-year-old whisper that teaches us how to align our internal rhythm with the pulse of the earth.
As we walk toward the final chapter of our long journey, let’s meet the most humble yet deepest waters that have been waiting to welcome us home.
- Mo-Oak-Nu-Su (Thatched Earth Rainwater)
- Dong-Gi-Sang-Han (Bronze Condensed Dew)
- Chwi-Tang (Twice-Refined Life Essence)
